Littering devastates our oceans

What is litter? Litter is rubbish that people throw away (even from their cars, sometimes!) Things like plastic toys, old supermarket trolleys, plastic bags, old pens, plastic buckets are all rubbish and when people don’t want them anymore, they just leave them somewhere.

In Auckland our rubbish goes into the Hauraki Gulf Marine Park and the sea creatures are at risk of dying. Litter ends up in the sea when either the wind blows it there or the water washes it down there. It doesn’t look nice and it is definitely not good for sea animals and plants.

We learned that litter, especially plastic can get animals tangled up and make them suffocate. Sea animals like seals

and dolphins dive through the water and can dive through plastic bags and get caught up and die. We should always try and reuse or reduce the number of plastic bags we use at home. We learned that litter, especially plastic can get animals tangled up and make them suffocate. Sea animals like seals

Room 6 has been collecting rubbish every day for the past three weeks and we found people are still leaving their yoghurt pots and wrappers around the school. We must remember to “reduce, reuse, recycle and refuse” so that we can protect our planet.

Our Sailing Day

Last Thursday Room 6 and Room 7 went Sailing at Panmure Basin. When we got there we met the teachers named Steph, Blair and Ellie. They were telling us what to do on the boats. The sail on the boat was to check the direction of the wind. Steph was teaching us about this key chain on the boat and it was called pulley.

After that, Room 7 went first to sailing and Room 6 did land activities. When Room 7 finished we went sailing and my partner was Angelina. When we were going to choose our boat we had to put our life jackets on. While we were putting our jacket on Angelina’s and my life jacket were backwards so Ms Agnew and Mr Bell helped us to do it. When we finished and Steph was telling us how to get on I found a shell. So I told Ms Agnew “I found sea shells!” so she told me to put the seashells in my pocket. The pocket was on the jacket.

When we went on it I was doing the rudder and Angelina was doing the sail. It was so much fun and we felt so free on the water. We both fell into the water and Kava had to come and help us.

We were all very tired when we walked back to school but it was the best day ever.
